1823. May 18.
Constitut. Code

(f.) [Subordinate] The relation between functionary
and functionary in any number of ranks grades one under another,
is that, for the designation of which, this word is most commonly
employed: but, in a more extended sense, it is, not
unfrequently, employed, to designate the relation between ruler
or rulers on the one part, and subjects on the other, without
reference to rank grade in any other shape.

Conjugates to the word subordination, indicative of
the effect of the sort of relation in question, is the term subordinate,
indicative of the individual, between whom and
another individual, the relation had place. For the designation
of this other individual, the correlative term superordinate
may by analogy be aptly, because expressively, employed.
The word superior, commonly employed as the correlative
of subordinate, is not correspondently or adequately and correspondently
determinate. It conveys not, as subordinate does, the idea of a
system of official grades,
one above another:
in a word the idea
of order is not yet so
decidedly conveyed
it.

Subordination has for it's object the causing execution
and effect to be given, by the acts of the subordinate, to the
will, declared or undeclared, of the superordinate.

For producing this effect result, two distinguishable operations are in
use to be rendered employable: hence, of the effect itself, namely subordination, two distinguishable
correspondent modes: 1. subordination by dislocability: 2. subordination
by punibility: namely, on the part of the subordinate
in pursuance of a will to that effect on the part of the superordinate.

Subordination by dislocability has place in so far as
the subordinate functionary is liable to be dislocated by an the
expression of a correspondent will or other act performed for that purpose
of the superordinate.

Subordination by punibility has place, in so far as
the subordinate is liable to be punished in consequence suffer punishment in pursuance of
an expression of will or other act performed for that purpose a will having place to that effect on the part of the superordinate,
by the superordinate in the event of his non-compliance with
any lawful official direction given to him on the part of the superordinate.
