On this occasion as on every other, the case is, that so
as his a man's conduct do but take the right direction, whether it be
by his own hand or by the hand of any other person that the
same right direction has been pointed out and effectually recommended
to him is matter of no moment indifference it comes to the same
thing.

Special causes of delusion out of the question
With relation to the subject matter of
The man himself suppose has not sufficient to acquire
which anything which even to his own conception can present
itself as anything like adequate appropriate intellectual
aptitude: neither knowledge of the facts that belong to the case, nor therefore
judgment, for want of the materials necessary to form a
ground for it. He therefore looks round him for some person
or other in whose breast this same aptitude in all branches taken
together has place in the highest degree. On the occasion of
this research, the Public Opinion Tribunal in so far as be access
to it is open to him are not to be overlooked. In the state
of things society here supposed, no member of the community can
there be, before whose eyes the reports of the most active
Committees of that body are not continually open. The
names of all such of its members as taken a prominent part
in the conduct of its business are every day presented to his
eyes: in conjunction with their names he observes sees their
characters as delineated by the conjunct industry of all
hands: by themselves by those on the same side, by those on
the opposite side. On the occasion his attention directs points itself
upon among a peculiar silence he observes taking pursuing the same course

among the different sets whom on this occasion he observes taking
so many different courses and giving their support to so many
different candidates, he makes as well as he can his choice.
He chooses To save embarassment in the set to toward which his
judgment and affection have with most complacency he choose pitches some one
whose character, in his idea of the maker is more permanent than
that of any of the others
there, this voice in a word, he
looks to as his Oracle.
