This of itself would be plain enough. of But in the

in speaking of that which he was doing, in and by this
ceremony: purifying himself, or as, at this time of day
we should say clearing himself: clearing himself of
what? of an imputation that had been
Of the charges or accusations that had been brought against
him. Clearing himself? how? Answer – by exhibiting
that which under the Jewish law was regarded as
conclusive evidence of the truth of the assertion for which
the ceremony was employed to give evidence: viz. that he
never had told the Jews people in question, not to circumcise
their children, not to walk of after the curtains
i.e. to leave the burthensome ordinances in question
unobserved.
