1823. May 27
Constitut. Code

Well then this war is it ever to receive its termination? give way to peace?
Oh no: not if the Constitutional Code be anything stronger
than wash paper. For by any such peace not only so far
from being its having the Constitution without alteration, alteration
or correction whatsoever in any of its details, not scarcely
would so much as a single article remain unaltered.

For True it is that to any proposition for making the
Constitution still worse than it is, and in particular for any proposition having for its object the soothing the rage of the confederated enemies of mankind and this incorrigibility affords has afforded
a short answer. But of this answer with all its shortness
of this short answer where is the use? This rage has it in
any degree been soothed. Or those any of those men whose
endeavours it might have been to substitute to the existing
constitution a constitution still worse in any point would
they be better
to any such men would any satisfaction
be afforded by the receipt of an indirect and irrational
refusal to a direct and rational one?
