Constitutional Code
To On a nearer closer and more particular view, the sweets of power objects
of general desire, and in so far as obtained by power, the
sweets of power may be thus enumerated. 1. Matter of wealth Money and making
moneys worth or in other words the matter of subsistence and
abundance and together with the means of security. 2. power, or the faculty
of causing other persons to minister to a man's happiness.
3. respect, esteem, reputation, estimation ideal objects differing
from one another by scarcely describable shades of difference, but
all concurring in a their tendency to cause other persons to minister
to a man's happiness; all so many means of happiness ease at the expence of duty and in particular
official duty – their ease the absence of all painful labour
and thence a negative means of negative happiness: 5. vengeance, at
the expence of justice: Matter of wealth the means of gratification
together with power, and estimation – means of gratification to
the self-regarding and incidentally to the social affections; vengeance,
the means of gratification to the antisocial affections.
