Emancipation Spanish

§. 4. Rulers gainers
Factitious Dignity

40 35 17.
In their origin, instruments
of factitious dignity
produced more effect
namely more
than could then be produced
without them:
writing and reading
being little in use:
printing not at all.

41 36 18.
When letters not being
generally understood
shops had their signs,
men had theirs: viz
armorial bearings.

§. 4. Rulers gainers
Factitious Dignity

42 37 19.
Case in which it has
most appearance of
being useful, that where
it is given as a reward
for military merit. Even
here it produces considerable
evil: good in no
shape.

§. 4. Rulers gainers
Factitious Dignity

43 38 20.
Good use, none: nowhere
any need of it. No ground
for supposing that, where
reward in this shape
exists, better service will
be done than where it
does not.

44 39 21.
In Spain, English &c.
Wellington at head, allies
by side got the better
of French oftener than
French over them. For
this, Wellington gets a
Dukedom when it was
a maxim that Dukedoms
should be confined
to blood royal. No reason
for supposing that, without
any such reward in
prospect, the same preeminence
would not
have been displayed by
him. Without it, life, in
which every thing else is
included, would have
been equally at stake.

45 40 22.
Without any such reward,
American Jackson beat
those who had beaten the
French. With the Dukedom
a prospect he wd.
not have killed &c, any
more.

46 41 23,
Victory proves not so
much as comparative
merit in the commander
– much less positive.
Two armies engaging,
either the battle is drawn
or one must have the
advantage.
