Constitut. Code

or 1.
Qu. Condition of functionaries
– why here comparatively
so unfavorable.
Answer. Reasons.
By few words here at
outset, repetitions may
be saved.

or 2.
Cause of the supposition
of hardship, observation
of the worship paid to
high functionaries in all
Governments but democratical.

or 3.
Cause of the hardship
here, end in view – greatest
number's greatest
happiness.

or 4.
Cause of worship elsewhere,
end in view one
or few's greatest happiness.

or 5.
Cause of Worship also
where
Not harder is
the condition of highest
functionaries here rendered
as than do. of non-functionaries.
Nor yet so hard: since
the power, though no emolument
&c. be added to
it, is worth always something.

or 6.
Erroneous the notion
that for mere power, by
no honorable man, i.e.
no man fit for the office,
will be engaged
to submitt to such indignities.
worse hardships
in various shapes is every
where submitted to
without reluctance.

or 7.
Cause of the notion of
such hardship, notion
of moral and other excellence,
in the functionary:
in all who have
opulence or power.

or 8.
Such the force of that
delusion, which is the
inseparable companion
of corruption, both having
instruments in common.

or 9.
Not content with power
and opulence, they
put on an embroidered
surtout of this.
Thus accoutered, they
claim title of excellence:
who shall dispute it?

or 10.
Repeated is the word
of worship by those at
whose expence every
thing is made just so
an Idol-maker: after
making an idol, worships
it.

or 11.
Wherever, under the
name of Excellence, superiority
is thus arrogated
and attributed,
an inferiority has place
in reality. So says Truth
and Reason. Contrà Imagination
and Fiction.
