If habitiments a
means of giving respect
they would give as
much to the worst
as to the best Judge

In so far as these marks of distinction have had their
effect intended effect, intended they have procured for the worst
man the same quantity of respect as for the best

Respect in a certain proportionate quantity in/on the part/quarter will by the nature of
man be among the inseparable consequences of power in
the other: so likewise of whatsoever appropriate intellectual
aptitude in whatsoever shape it can not fail to be possessed
in a degree quantity more or less considerable by every one to whom
it can to happen to have been in that the situation in question
trusted. But the by the sort of certificate afforded
by habitiments of a the form and nature usually similar
to those customarily worn by persons belonging to this class
he will be certified his habitual good behaviour to be in the habit of conducting
himself in a manner at least as as being at least equally good with that of an average man
of that same class: and of this certificate an every
unapt individual will avail himself in such airs
as to indulge without fear of consequences to indulge in
the practices of corresponding to those pernicious habit vices to the infection of which by the
possession of or the power belonging to that commanding
situation be stands exposed. By haughtiness of demeanour
he will it will be his constant endeavour to maximize the quantity
of respect by paid to him bestowed on him by those all who are subject to his
power: and whatsoever is claimed by apparent knowledge
is naturally conceded by self-conscious ignorance.
