Mr Jefferson and Burr had the same number of
Votes for president and the choice was left to Congress with whom
it was reported Burr intrigued and made some promised to
the federal party to espouse their politics provided they
gave him their votes: this was promulgated by Alexr
Hamilton and ruined Burr with his party, for which Burr
challenged Hamilton & shot him.

The federal party, as they call themselves, but who
really ought to be called the British aristocracy party,
is of old standing and make a formidable stand, on the
convention that formed the federal constitution, in favour
of an exact copy of the British Constitution— two powers
hereditary and only one elective— debating for some days;
and when they were outvoted by the Democracy they
had the influence to bring a resolution into the
convention that nothing that had been said in the
house should ever go out of it or be published,
which the Democratic part of the convention have
religiously kept— not one syllable having yet been
put into print, though it is said some one of the
Democratic members has taken down the speeches.

That the sovereignty of the federal Government and
that of each individual State has already come into collision
and is liable to interfere with and contradict each other
(imperium in imperio, like a watch with two main
springs) as their affairs became more extensive and
complicated has been observed as a defect in giving
so much power to the federal government and perhaps
after all the old men are dead that labored to form
the federal Constitution and it ceases to be supported by the
selflove of the greatest part of the influential men of
the Union or in other words rests only on its own
merit the probability is that it will be changed
and the power of the federation much limited— for it must
