5. Besides the above occasional rewards, other
rewards are offered for the like service by the permanent
provisions of divers statutes: amount from
£5 or £10 to £40, according to the supposed
enormity of the offence. Here would be a regular
and source for of perjurious gain, if if were
in the nature of the case – of men and things that
perjury should be resorted to for any such purpose.
Yes though the knowledge of the temptation is so universal
– and especially among the most depraved
characters with which the community is invested, among
the sort of characters the least encumbered with moral
scruples, f the case instances in which criminative perjury
is resorted to as the means of obtaining the proposed gain
so proffered, are at least as rare not to say unexampled
as in the f case last mentioned case.

Another indication still more instructive and conclusive is afforded
by this class of instances. Among In a class of
characters among whom are whom the action of the general causes of truth
may be considered as more than ordinarily weak, two

principally to prevent the opportunity of exercising making
any such wicked profit from being embraced: one is
