that man to whose cognizance the offence may have presented itself, an interest
adequate to the purpose. F In these cases the interest is sometimes reward thus to be obtai earnt
reckoned by pounds – sometimes and perhaps more as frequently not unfrequently by shillings.
The penalty was frequently in many instances portioned out in shares: one, applied
so as to constitute the reward for prosecution – the inducement to prosecute,
the other to the poor of each rateable district – the parish; that is (for ob
so it was construed) to the rich, i:e: the inhabitants reliable for the
taxable, for the maintenance of the poor. Parishes being of all degrees
of population from units to as many thousands, the profit to a
obtainable in that way by perjury may might in an extraordinary case rise as high
as a few farthings or even pence: but much oftener it would not
rise to the level of a single farthing. The eye of legal science had
applied itself to the subject, this species of microscopic interest had
been discovered; and so successful had been the exertions of lawyers
in the cause of delinquency and injustice, that thiswhich class division of
laws the law had been converted into nearly a dead letter.

Such had begun at length had been the spread of the disease To such a height had the disease swelled that the country
gentlemen to whom in the character of Magistrates it belonged to give
execution to the laws there debilitated, had become impatient and
were crying out for a remedy. It was a law case: and the remedy,
if from by any body, was to come from be prepared by lawyers, if it were to be had at
it was by the hand of a lawyer that was to administer it be applied. The
man of science being applied to, proceeded at once in that branch
of science never fail to proceed in such cases. The medicine
that was opened with an unwilling hand, and according to an established rule of legal pharmacy, as usual a
plaister of the size of a was cut out for a sore to cover a sore of the
size of a crown piece. As the disease shews what jurisprudence is,
so the remedy shews what legislation is in the hands of lawyers.
