9. Pecuniary punishments – they consist in taking
from the delinquent a certain sum of money,
or an article capable of being converted into money.

10. Quasi pecuniary punishments – they consist in
depriving the delinquent of a sort of property in
the services of others, or of services combined
with
that produce pecuniary advantage.

11. Characteristic punishments – punishment
which by means of a certain analogy are
designed strongly to convey impress the imagination with
an idea of the offence. These punishments
do not form properly a separate class:
they are comprized in all the others –
ignominious, penitential afflictive, &c. it is
a mode of infliction where the
they are rendered analogous by combining with
other the mode operation of infliction there some circumstances
which bear relation to the
nature of the offence. Let us suppose
that a Coiner instead of being condemned to capitally punished
suffer death, were condemned to undergo
other punishments, and amongst with others
to secure the impression of indelible marks –
if there were impressed in the imprinted in
the center of his forehead the word coiner
and on each cheek the representation of any
of piece the current money, this punishment
exciting the idea of the offence by a visible
able object, would eminently characterise.

Thus in the composition of the punishment
for child stealing would be made to enter
a characterisic penit penance, consisting
in the suspending upon the neck of the delinquent a
the carved representation of a of a child of the
natural dimension hollowed out and covered with
the exterior covered with lead. In the interior
might at the discretion of the Judge,
proportioned to the bodily strength of the
delinquent.
