The fountain of deceit treachery and confusion is not yet exhausted. There is no
safety Such is the language of English Judges. There is no safety
no believing it; – as little is there in disbelieving it. – "George
"the .... We command you that .... you do personally be and appear
"before our trusty and well-beloved the Right Honourable
"....... Lord Chief Baron of our Court of Exchequer at Westminster
" on Monday the day of a next at
"of the clock in the forenoon:... to notify and confirm our said
"Chief Baron concerning certain articles or interrogations which
"will .... be produced, to you in a ... cause – wherein G.P. is
"plaintiff and K.S. is defendant ..... and that you do bring
"with you ... a certain indenture of settlement —c." Then comes
the threat about the £100 penalty.† † Fowler II, 118.

In the A summons in this form of this sort is as well as the summons
of the other sort called a writ of Subpoenâ: that, a
writ of Subpoenâ simply, this a Writ of Subpoenâ duces tecum.
In that former case, appearance we have seen is not to be understood
to signify appearance: here it instead be understood.
In that case if a man does not employ an attorney to appear
instead of him he is punished: in this case, if he does employ
an Attorney to appear instead of him he is punished.

Of all this falshood and all this deceit, together with a prodigious
mass of like falshood and deceit, the object is in description simple enough,
the object is as simple, as the success, and the success of it has been compleat – to drive
men on every occasion into the arms of a legion of lawyers
of an Attorney in the first instance, to under whose care he will who will make him run
the gaunt through the rest. Such under the technical system
is the matter, and such the object, of jurisprudential science!
