Evidence
If by pronouncing the word buzz in a certain tone, and
with the accompaniment of certain ceremonies, it were really
in the power of an old woman to cause a man to experience
convulsions spasmodic contractions in his limbs, and to expectorate crooked
pins in an unlimited quantity, the word Buzz with its these accompaniments
would instead of contempt and ridicule be an
a subject of mysterious science, an object of more and well-grounded veneration admiration. By pronouncing
any such word as the word buzz it has never has been in
the power of any English Judge to produce convulsions in any mans
limbs or to draw crooked pins out of any man's stomach.
But by pronouncing words in no respect more aptly connected
with the decisions grounded in the name than the word buzz
is with the convulsions or the crooked pins, it has for ages
past been in the power of all every English Judge to convulse a
mans whole frame, and to draw money in indefinite quantities
out of his pocket into their own, and those of their connections
and dependents. With what exuberance of effect this power
has been exercised for ages, every term, or every day what is the same
thing every day (for in the language of those sages, every one day and every term
of thirty days are one) every term and every day of that day
can testify: – and so long as the power continues and continues
to be thus exercised, so long will the pretences be continued to be adored as reasons,
and so long will the volumes in which they are recorded, be
revered as the sources of wisdom as form so many fountains of wisdom, and and the repositories of science.
