Evidence
Of all the presumptive indications that can be afforded of the
imperfection of any branch of science, of the weakness and incompetence
of the minds that cultivate it have applied themselves to the cultivation of it, there can not be a
surer or more impressive indication than a multiplicity of
leading terms, unconnected with in point of import and independent with respect to each other, and exhibited as the
names of so many distinct and independent unconnected principles: a rope of sand is the
true emblem of the speculations thus exhibited in the field
of that science. While the science is thus treated cultivated, the whole
field of it is remains in a state of confusion, and the more assiduously
and abundantly it is thus cultivated, the thicker the confusion into which
it is plunged, and the further off the haters and their
disciples are from a correct conception of the contents.
