Evidence

Four or five different modes of collecting evidence, all
of them employed together promiscuously, and not only in different on different
, some in one case some in another; but all employable and employed in the
offence: all differing in this respect of the degree of their ideas congruity & competency,
some incongruence palpably incongruous, and that in the extreme, if theirs though less incongruent,
the incongruity openly and continually acknowledged.
Yet all employed with equal complacency and composure.
Here is incongruity enough, but where is the inconsistency,
where is the matter for surprize? With the existence of any
any such affection as the love of a warm regard for justice, such practice is
felt reached not only inconsistent inconsistent enough but irreconcilable for themselves
of the incongruous modes is repugnant in manifest repugnancy to the ends of justice.
But at the in question in the bosoms of the authors
of the existing system there was not any such affection no such affection existed as
the love of justice: they did not wish what they did not never did
wish was truth should be brought to light: what they never
did wish was that justice should be done: what they
never ceased to wish was that in every part of it the system should be as inconsistent
full of inconsistencies as possible. Why? because
the packs of inconsistencies and absurdities of all sorts the
more intricate, the more incomprehensible, the more incognoscible.

scarce may ris Neither in this nor in any other respect
could the system become better without there being lowers by the change: in few
respects could it be worse without there being the gainers by the change.
