Evidence
In a word, the grosser the absurdities which the public
eye is in the habit can be habituated of contemplating without contempt, the
more flagrant the mischiefs – the more cruel the afflictions
which it is in the habit of beholding viewing with indignation,
the more confirmed is the subjection, the more helpless the emancipation
of the public mind.
The more firmly they for themselves in the habit of turning
their own backs, the more firmly will they fear the people
in the habit of turning their backs, upon the ends and thence
upon the dictates, of justice: of denying all confidence to
their own judgment, of bestowing compleat confidence over the
judgment, that is on the language discourse, the pretended judgment
of their those constant and sure deceivers; of regarding reason with distrust, and
nonsense with veneration: of regarding not truth, but lies,
base lies under the name of fiction, as the basis of justice: of beholding
indulging the arbiter of their fate in the
practice of habitual practice of every iniquity, at in so easy a condition as that
of his employing a lie to justify it, of regarding mendacity
not as one aggravation, but as justification,
of injustice.
