What Protestant will so much as endure the supposition Reflecting on the Popes of Rome, their and their bulls,
the arrangements of all sorts that under whatever names, and on
whatever occasions issued from that mysterious source – what
Protestant will so much as endure the supposition that in
their dealings transactions with the sovereign governments and people by whom that recognized
their spiritual authority, the real welfare either
of their sovereign or their people respective subjects was in a principal degree,
not to say in any degree, the object in view? aimed at? But in no
respect under the Papal Ecclesiastical system were the interests of those
spiritual potentates more deadly at variance with that of
the people in the character of religionists, than under the
technical system the interest of its authors, the judicial
fraternity has all along been and to this hour continues
to be at variance with the interests of the people in the
character of suitors: at no time has the fate of the people
been so directly and compleatly in the hands dependent upon the will of those
spiritual potentates, as it ever has been, and so long as
the sovereign continues his support must ever continue
to be dependent upon the will of those its their natural
and irreconcilable enemies.
