Evidence Introd.
False Ends – Lawyers sinister interest more sinister than that of the worst
Kings – William the Conquerer – John – Hen. 7. A King being for life and
hereditary has a permanent interest in the prosperity of his subjects: the
Country is his Estate: they are the richer they are, the richer he may be.
Judges till lately were like temporary proprietors of E. India Stocks: their
interest consisted in gathering in as quick as possible whatever money
was to be got.
Hen. 7 – though a bad King plundered his subjects through the medium
of the criminal branch only, not the civil.
The Statutes of for the amendment of the law viz: Jurisprudential law are so many evidences of
the depravity of its authors, the Judges.
Judges knew not what was conducive to the true ends: ignorance,
want of appropriate intelligence would of itself have suffered to
render their work ill-conducive to the ends of the justice.
But they knew full well what was conducive to their own profit;
they had every degree of appropriate intelligence requisite to enable them
to make the work conducive to the false end – thence unconducive
to the time.
