Evidence

Driven out of the presence of the Judge parties suitors were driven into
the arms of professional lawyers, avowed professed assistants of the parties,
secret confederates and virtual partners of the Judge. Driven into
the arms of those treacherous assistants, yes good: but by what
means could may the distrust of the customer be most advantageously turned
to account? The problem might have been a difficult one, had
it not for the art of writing led to a solution of it.

Without the assistance of this art, the no comparison of the
information flowing from the original source, the lips of the parties
themselves, any representation that could have been made by
their substitutes would have been so flagrantly untrustworthy
and inadequate, that even at the lowest pitch of human
intelligence the common sense of mankind woul would have revolted at the the any such arrangement, and put a decided negative on it. But by the help
of this master convenient art, whatever could be said by the party could
also be said by his substitute. Whatsoever might become of veracity and and correctness
of the information,
quantity need not be lessened, on the contrary it might be increased,
and that to any amount, by the change.

The greater the quantity, the greater the Proportioned In the quantity
of the writing thus made would consist the quantity of the service done
or appearing to be done: the greater the quantity of service done,
the greater the quantity of money or moneys worth that, with an
appearance at least of reason might be demanded, in the name of
recompense.

But to render this service to the best advantage, the mere
mechanism, the manual part of the art here work of the hand was not sufficient: the
work of the head required to be added; and a degree of appropriate skill
asserted to that work: the skill which consisted in saying whatever was
best suited, or supposed to be best suited, to the advantage of the client,
the end professed to be in view: more additional ulterior demand, more reason, or at any
rate more pretence for ulterior recompense.
