Evidence

Meantime of the topics considerations from as contemplated by the consideration of which
so important a conclusion was produced, a slight some intimation,
how slight and general soever, a thin may be not altogether
character of that due for proof

not altogether without its use.

The following are the propositions by which they may
stand expressed. For the present, those may be considered as so many
positions all down for proof.

That in the of this instrument
is an incongruity and that a very gross one a supposition
1. That, in the very essence of this instrument,
a rash and grossly incongruent supposition is involved,
the power of the Almighty viz: that, for the purpose of eventual punishment,
and thence for the purpose of dominion, applicable to any
purpose end in view at pleasure, the power of the Almighty his,placed
by him
at the absolute disposal – at all times at the disposal – of any the most worthless
of his natures of mankind humankind.

2. That by the religion of Jesus, of in so far as the precepts
ascribed to Jesus are to be admitted as containing the
expression of it, the application of any such instrument
to the purpose any such purpose as this here in question
is stands prohibited; prohibited in the plainest and most pointed terms:(a) (a) "Swear not at all" &c (Mat. .)
and that for any exception which may be thought a may may feel
for his himself disposed to cut out of that prohibition, imagination is the only warrant that can
be found.(a)

That by the Articles expressive of the particular heads
of Established religion of that modification of the religion of Jesus which is is established in England, the
use of it, is though declared allowable, is not on any
occasion enjoined.(b) (b) ... Article 39. "We Judge that Christian Religion doth not prohibit, but
"that a man may swear when the Magistrate requireth".... &c.
