Evidence – Introduction Sketch or Abridged
Taking this for the ground of exclusion, namely the fact of
a mans deriving emolument from the circumstance of his
having uttered the assertion in question, whether it be confirmable
or unconfirmable to the truth of the case – in a word – his
being induced by bribery to make it give utterance to it, the following are among
the classes of persons every individual member of which would find himself
this ground of exclusion applying to his case.
1. All the persons Every person who for the purpose of gaining
admission into a situation to which the objects of general
desire in any shape are annexed a utter in
speech or writing a discourse the purpose object of which is to declare
the existence of a persuasion on their part of
the truth of this or that opinion whatsoever it may be
in relation to on this or that subject of opinion whatever it may be.
In this description is included comprehended every person by whom
an oath or solemn declaration called a test has been taken.

1. Public functionaries in great number multitude and variety
2. In particular all those who have any place in the Ecclesiastical
Establishment
3. All those to whom under the auspices o the Established Church
the education of youth is committed
4. In a still more special manner the persons belonging to those
classes by which as such are the largest portions of the general aggregate mass of the
objects of general desire – money, power and factitious dignity
are possessed: and at the head of this the first person in factitious dignity after the Royal family the Archbishop of Canterbury
of all England.
