If they are false in part, they are false altogether: since [in] the universality of their
truth [is that forms] the essence of their character.
The form which they bear is that of universality: and an universal proposition which is not true always, is true never. If by way of obviating this objection, their pretended universality is made brought down to shrink to generality if in <add>by such case means</add> they cease to be false, they cease to be instructive: for much dependence instruction is not to be placed in gained from a proposition, which being sometimes true & sometimes false, you are still turned to seek [which it is] when you would make use of it whether it be the one or to'ther.

Most of those which pass current in the Law were huddled up in some agag
by persons who when they made them did not see seldom saw to one half of their extent: never thinking
(if I may be permitted the phrase), of taking measure of the subject matter, [it is]
no wonder if they do not fit.
