CERTAINTY JEOFAILS

As all those contrivances by which Justice is eluded, spring arise out of some stage or other of
the Judicial proceedings, the order of those proceeding will afford us [the most] a simple & natural
track course of investigation. Passing thus along we shall see how the weakness of the Law is
every where rooted situated in some [inoperative]needless and preternatural excrescencies in the parts which
we successively meet with in the our way which [excrescencies] being cut off, we shall observe
how convalescence & vigor follow every where the stroke of the extirpating amputating Knife.w observe how [directly] vigor 2 science follow every where the stroke of the ting Knife.

We shall some times have occasion to observe how some of these excrescencies have
been cherished by [cultivation[propped]]as if each of them in them only had [been] contained the Punctum
saliens which animates the whole system. Many to this hour for want of
a distinct anatomical anatomy view of it, conceive as if tho' there should not be the points
at which vitality originates, yet that it is so diffused through them as to through so many
ducts to the operative parts, that were they there to be extirpated, the punishment deperition of these
[would ensue, as] be a necessary consequence

To dismiss the Metaphor, our order will therefore be that of time. The Period

commencing from the obnoxious act, and extending to that on which the time when the execution of
that punishment should follow which the Law has endevored to make it's consequence.
The causes of uncertainty in the Law therefore are all comprehended in the circumstances accidents that
may arise to frustrate [execution] the purposes of the Law <add>it's operation</add> within the interval of these two Periods.
