CERTAINTY

Jeofails Informalities &c.

Before the Populace had attempted it directly
others of a rank superior to, but activated in
that behalf by the prejudices of the Populace
wished indirectly that indirectly the Prison-doors might
be indirectly thrown open for the escape of one single man.
Unfortunately for this country, if the impression
thus made continue still, the popularity affection for <add>fewer </add> of that
man's causes diffused itself upon those disrespectfulunseemly
expedients in the texture of the Law, bythrough which as this man
escape in future whose suffering may be as dear much
an object of their wishes as his was of their fears

I charge not the yielding to this impression uponas
human Nature on other of peculiar reproach to any one I charge
it upon Human Nature: so strong is the propensity
both of aversion antipathy and of affection to themselves
upon all occasions from the end to the means, that the last-exercised
Philosophy when put a ruddon to the trial, is not
always able to them entirely to their proper
