3 2. Turbulent men might behave with indecency before a Judge The other is grounded in considerations the
respect due to the dignity of a Judge. The vain
discourse of ignorant men would give disgust to his
superior understanding. The gusts of passion into
which they might find themselves betrayd would
expose him to affronts not to be endured.

This argument has for its ground the fundamental
maxim which th if not openly proclaimed has not been the less respected to which so much inward respect is
shewn and of which so little mention is made
that Judges wer suitors were made for Judges
not Judges for suitors.

4 This argument is inconsistent with the foregoing This Well or ill-grounded, this argument, howsoever grounded into
the throat of the other. Judges are so stupid
a race of men in comparison of Attornies that
would what the latter find no difficulty in comprehending
would be unintelligible to the former.
Yet such is the acuteness of their understanding
and so exquisite their sensibility, that all the
emoluments and all the dignity that can be annexed
to their office can not afford them an adequate
compensation for the pain of listening
at times to the discourse of sim complaints grievances of
the poor.

As to gusts of passion the place one should
think of all others where a man would be least
in danger of giving vent to them would be that where he
