18 The mischief which a lawyer is capable of doing to society depends not upon his own qualities but upon the opportunity left him by the law The greater or less quantity degree of mischief done
by Lawyers Attornies depends in no degree upon any qualities
of which preliminary tests taken previous to their entrance
can indicate the presence or the absence but altogether
on the latitude opportunities given them and
the latitude it left them by the law. Men are Man is in
all stations what the law has made them him but this
is more particularly true of the Lawyer. It is
only when in as far as it is licensed by the iniquity or negligence of
the Laws that fraud and in this line chicane has it in its
power to do mischief. In England no device or
fraud of any lawyer can be so adverse to the
purposes of truth and justice as is the general
tenor of that branch of the law which regulates the
course of procedure. You can hardly require a
Lawyer that he shall not take such advantage as
the law affords him: and the present state of this branch of
the law of England is such as affords every
advantage that can well be desired to a bad cause
