22 2. Mischief to the present partition of the benefit of the monopoly The abolition of this monopoly it would also
be said would be a bad thing for those who
now enjoy the benefit of it. It would turn them
out of the possession of a privilege of which they
enjoy in virtue of the law and which they have
bought in various ways by money and service
Whatever would be the difference between their
gain under the monopoly and what would be
their gain when deprived of it is would be so much
taken from them by an injustice as great as it
would be to deprive them of land or money to
equal value.
23 Answers This argument also admitts of answers little less
satisfactory than the preceding one.
