Demare English Justices of Peace Courts of Conscience even for a single one resentment or ignorance of
the expense may dictate force a man upon into the use
of so violent a remedy. Accordingly no endeavours
to increase the numbers of those privileged spots or
to enlarge their jurisdiction are ever endured without
an opposition which has frequently proved successful:
Courts of Conscience and summary justice
being invasions almost equally atrocious of the privilege
of that sacred mode of trial whose glory
it is to save a man from injury repair a loss
at the expence of a few score ten or twenty times is a few hundred times
the amount of it from once or twice to some thousand
times the amount of it.
