Secret causes committees For the composing of family differences the
Committee has not appointed the favourite Office of
Reconciliation. It has But it has appointed
another tribunal: and another tribunal was
nothing less than necessary. Still the old and
but too natural but superficial notion, as there is a different
sort of work to be done there must be a different
set of hands to do it. It is the first conception
and the Committee beset like Hercules
with toil toils have has had no time for correcting
first conceptions.
So careful as they are in about the choice of
Judges in groupes rising one above another from
three to thirty-six and yet Judges may are to be made by any body out of any thing, nor so as the suitors
do but happen to be members of the same family
no human being is to deemed too weak or
too wicked to be invested with that sacred office.
Could they not consider that the worst men as
well as the best are equally to be found in families?
Had they then no prudent divine among them
to warn them against falling into the sin of
Jeroboam? and is it less dangerous there less
danger in taking Judges than Priests from among
the dregs of the people?
