Secret Committees been the authors or abettors of the very misconduct
or supposed misconduct which they are called upon to censure? This
case though so natural much in nature seems
never to have been called to mind. Laws and or
customs in France are not wanting which
adopt making of this use of a sort of domestic tribunal
might have served to throw some light
upon some at least of all these doubts: yet but to
them the Committee make no reference. These
omissions it may very probably have been in
the intention of the Committee to supply by
subsequent details to be given in the sequel
of the work: but of such design no intimation
is here given.

The judgment of the family when pronounced
is not to be executed till after it has
been presented to and received the confirmation of
whom? the Canton Court? the Reconciliation Office
of the District? The District Court? No — but the
Court of the Department. Here — it is with reluctance
I say it I make the observation
but I can not help suspecting that in all
this business the Committee has cause of the
poor, that of the great body of the nation, in a
word of any but the very rich has never been so
much as in thought: for while where there is a Court for every
