I will have nothing to do with Peace-Officers
or Conciliation-Officers under any name or
under any pretence. The name of It may even call itself Officers of Charitable Jurisprudence, but the name sound of Charity shall not impose upon me. Charity covers a multitude of sins: but for the original vice sin of this institution all the simplest coverings are too narrow I want them as little
for the assistance of the Poor as for the
making up of sects among the rich. One
man for som the office service of the Poor I can not do without for the Poor
in causes that shall be found to require an
advocate, which among the poor at least I
hope will not be many. But I do not want
six men, three of them at least lawyers, to sit and hear
the cause in the first instance in order to
know whether employment is requisite to be given
to that one.
What the Committee have not done, I
will do. I will for the Poor I will do:
for I will not put myself to a great expence,
and see it all thrown away for want of a little
more. I will not be easily outdone in frugality:
but if a poor man should want a the copying of a paper, or the
defraying of the charges of a witness is absolutely
necessary to the proof of a poor man's case, shall
he for want aff of the money lose his cause?
