Judges Members Judicial Estate
2. Numbers assist one another in shifting off the
odium of an unjust decision from one to another
till it a great part of it is lost. I did not lik
much like it, I must confess: but I found the
general sense ran so strong that way I did not know
not how to resist. So says each Judge to his
friends: and so say the friends of each Judge
for him. As this is seen in all criminals, so
when Judges are criminals, may it be seen in
all Judges. The sad scenes of capricious absurd cruelty
which the public has seen exhibited in India
under the mask of Justice and for which even
reparation has been decreed at the expence of the public not of though not at the
expence authors might perhaps not have been
acted had the responsibility rested entire upon
a single Judge.
Numbers then assist one another in eluding shifting
off upon others from his own shoulders the odium of an unjust decree — A single Judge
suffers it bears is tied to it without possibility of
escape.
