Respect to be paid to Judges.
may address him again and say, What then were your words?
Thereupon if he takes upon him to repeat his words, the Judge
may take down in writing the words which he takes upon
him as he pronounces them as and for the words which he had
pronounced before. If the party denies that those were his
words but insists that he cannot recollect what were his
words, the Judge may address him saying, whatever were
your words did you mean to treat the Court with disrespect behave disrespectfully to
the Court? The party then addressing himself to the Judge
shall say, "No indeed: it would be very wrong in me and it
"[was] is by no means my intention to behave in any manner
"disrespectfully to the Court: and I am sincerely sorry
"that any thing I may have done or uttered unawares
"should be thought to indicate such intention." If the party
should persist in not making any declaration to that
effect, the Judge may thereupon commit him as before.
A person thus committed shall remain in course in
prison for a week if not sooner discharged by order of the
Judge who committed him or of some superior Court; and
