§. Preliminary security
Means of compelling disclosure
(3) (2)

Compulsion produced
in a few days — as for
punishment the confinement
as effectual
without the bodily
harm as with
As to this compulsion so rarely scarcely can the
the effect fail of being produced before the end of a very few
weeks — not to say a few days. As to punishment for
prevention of the like by the patient, imprisonment without the
bodily pain will do it effectually as with: and as for deterring
others, the suffering being seen by them, in no shape can punishment
be less well adapted to the production of this effect.
7
Evil of adding solitude
to imprisonment
It is lamentable to think about a work of human
misery has been produced and is but too likely to continue to
be produced by the superadding to imprisonment for long
terms the mental and invisible pain of solitude.
8
Solitude unhappily
regarded by religionists
as a recipe for the
salvation of souls
Unhappily by certain classes of religionists solitude
has been regarded as a recipe — and that said to an
infallible one from the otherwise certain infinitely , and altogether endless pain of hell for the salvation of souls; and which thus being
admitted, there one art certainly can not be two meant
for it. the thing to be desired would be that all human beings
should be at all times in this state. The assumption is — that
when in this state, men and women, boys and girls will
pass the whole or the greatest part of the time in thinking
of those same pains of hell: and that by this idea they will
all the while be kept from sinning — from sinning not only in
deed but in thought. Not very well grounded does this assumption
appear to be. To thought the pain of hell any such pains do not present
an agreable object: and if this instrument — solitude
whatsoever may be the compulsive force it does not
extend apply to thought. Of the thoughts of persons in that, or in
any other situation the most natural object, in so far as
they have power over their thoughts, will be those pleasures in
which they have taken most delight: and these whatsoever may have
been the quantity of sin whatsoever be meant by sin —
contained in those same pleasures.
