These evils have been produced partly by absurdity
partly by stupidity, partly by carelessness partly by design,
by design and study and exertion employed in the endeavour
to give both of them for the sake and in full view of
the profit admitted is capable of being extracted out of
them

Impossible, impossible! Monsters such as these! the
existence of them is not possible!

Monsters? Not they indeed: neither were the
men—ordinary men: men such as by this situation,
men placed in the situation would become of course
Monsterclass — if there be any in the imaginable monsterclass
in the case, the members would be not those
who in this situation had acted as they have done,
but those who in that same situation had acted otherwise.
