Ch. Preface or Introduction
(3 §. Judges &c exposed why

2. Reason 2. End in view — Use and purpose and Destroying the influence of the present
upholders of the misery-producing system. The influence —
always understood that which is exercised in the understanding of
the many, by the understanding, or rather by the position in the
conjoined scales of wealth power and factitious dignity, of the
few: influence of understanding or understanding: for as to
influence of evils or will that is used scarce be said is
indestructible: so long as power, and wealth with the power
attached to it are in certain quantity in the hands of one set of men compliance and
obsequiousness will so long as man is man be provided have place in relation
to their will on the part of another others.

By the men in question so long as it can be opposed
with any the least prospect of success all of the substitution of a an
uncorrupt or a corrupt system will assuredly be opposed: were it
if possible ten times as mischievous as it is it reform would instead
of less be opposed with ten times as great energy as at present
By no set of men fraternity that ever existed was any [system of] practice
that brought or was regarded as bringing prosperity to themselves
was relinquished or left undefended have measures to secure the
mass of misery produced and seen by them to be produced by
others. In whatever shape reform or improvement is here any where else proposed
by them with proportionate energy, so long as any chance of success remains to opposition it will be sure to
be opposed: and if so it be thus may part of the profitable
abuse as either left undefended so avowedly surrendered
it will be so prop what is will be thereby be proved is — not that it
was not in their inclination, but that consistently their
it was not in their power to defend support it with success.
