Propinquity & certainty
of punishment being
maximized the extent
& duration magnitude & duration may be
lessened
In respect of propinquity as well as certainty, the value of the
punishment being thus at its maximum, less will be the amount
necessary in the shape of intensity and duration in a word — of
magnitude
Under the existing System even in case of imputed perjury
commitment on the spot is not without example. Consequent
of conviction and punishment in a precarious degree probable
certain in vast quantity needless delay vexation and expense
at the end of a day, or half a year, or a whole year,
commencement given to the long protracted course.
