1828. Feby. March 1
Law Amendment

23
Propositions
Ch. No Oath

And Licence to committ murder &c in a
Quaker's meeting

or 1
Oath has not not any
efficacy, but in case of
belief: nor then, but
in case of belief in the
power of the creator
over the Almighty
Creator.

Be the man who he may, if he does is not a believer
in retributive justice at the hands of the Almighty the oath
not have has not any influence; and nor if he is, it can not have
any influence on him, unless he is a believer in the existence
of this same power of the creation over the creator
the a power of the same sort the same in kind as that of the
English Westminster Hall Judge over the Sheriff, but much
superior in efficiency, the creator heavenly subordinate
not being disposed to make his escape out of the hands
of his earthly subordinate, as in the in any such
manner as that of which in the case of the Sheriff the
examples are so frequent and so undeniable.

or 2,
If Clergymen it is
the interest that Oaths
be abolished.

So many instances in which it is known that the
oath is being taken and is broken, so many instances in which
it is known that the expectation of retributive justice at the
hands of the Almighty is not entertained, or if entertainment
is without efficacy: inefficacious and therefore
useless even with all after whatever additional force can have
been given to it by the supposed corroboration.

On the In the case mind of a Clergyman of any in whose
mind there is any species of uncertainty this consideration
should operate as an inducement to join in ridding
judicature justice of this so falsely pretended sham sincerity. For, whether
there be any such retributive justice or not it is his interest
that there a belief in it should have place this should be believed: for if not his labour
in inculcating such belief is not worth paying for. But so may
whatever is the number of the instances in which the oath is
taken and broken, the same is the number of instances in which
it is proved by experience uncontravertible evidence that this the idea of such retributive
justice is without efficacy: remove the oath, and this source of
evidence, and efficient cause of so
adverse to his interest is extinguished.

[+]
insomuch that whatsoever
efficacy is possessed by
it, is produced by
the apprehension of punishment
at the hands of
law and public opinion
not at the hands of the
Almighty.
