The imbecillity of the dupe is the strength patrimony of the imposter: like every other
faculty endowment it improves by exercise: In the corporeal frame, a
test and index of strength is the magnitude
of the weight which a
man is able to lift.
In the reasoning faculty this the test of and index of
imbecillity is the grossness of the absurdity which a man has to :

Meantime the more pregnant fully the proposition, the
more difficult it would be, were it to be taken for by itself, were it not for some protecting prejudice, to get it
accepted in the character of for a reason. How is this to be done brought about? – the course recipe
to be taken is as follows. The task exercise has its difficulties, but there are
ways of enabling a man to go through it.

1. Turn to the best account possible, the predilection for man
the involved under in the word antiquity: as if wisdom were
the front of inexperience not of experience but of inexperience, or if
wisdom and experience were to be found – not in the , but
ex the cradle: as if the in a nation people as well as in an individual, the
stock of experience, and the faculty power of having it the account more compleat
at the time of his that coming into the world, and grows less and less
as he grows older the longer they continued in existence.

2. For this purpose employ the rhetorical and practical
receipts for giving to ordinary characters an extraordinary appearance.
Set him down in the age of . Place him a certain distance of time gave a soldier the name of
a hero, a less will serve to give a lawyer the name of sage less will suffice to convert a lawyer into a sage.

3. Band together as close as you can the idea of merit and
difficulty. The Various branches of science, mathematics for one,
will afford you materials for this purpose. That done, and done
to effect, will be a great gained the the nonsense, the greater
the difficulty of comprehending it. In some science, has made
the difficulty, and the industry of man what man may for is employed in the endeavour
to remove get rid of it – in false science, there is little or no difficulty
ready made, and the business of the sage is to make it or make
the most of it. Legis In the part in which which has been left to the lawyer is the
legislation is not any more than in the its other parts, without its
difficulties: but in this part the stock of natural difficulty which the
is as nothing in comparison of the stock of artificial: that which the
lawyer has faced in comparison of that which he has made. Astrology
having sill more difficulty in it should have still more difficulty: but Astrology
for want of power to support it, has at length fallen to the ground.
Neither attachment nor information lies against a man for not believing in the stars.
