Ch. Objections to the origin above assigned to the imperfections
of the times. Answers.
1. Incredible, any such universal and regular scheme of depredation
should have been formed: if it had the whole country would have been
in the hands of lawyers. Answer. 1. Reference to the facts in proof. 2.
2. Universal resistance stops the execution of the design wherever there is not some pretence
some shew of justice. 3. English Lawyers have contrived to gain
more plunder than any other Lawyers.
2. Force operable of Judges upon all occasions – on giving judgment
passing sentence &c. Answer. Acting proves nothing. The actor who
plays the victim or the sovereign not a better man than the actor who plays the tyrant
or usurper.
3. No co-operation – not probability of co-operation to any such
scandalous purpose. Answer. No concert, admitted: concert
neither natural nor necessary: where all individuals co-operate
towards the pursuit of the common corporate end, each by the pursuit
of his individual share in it, in virtue of his individual means and
opportunities, concert is quite needless. General national opulence, the
results of general co-operation, without general concert.
