On a former occasion the opinion

In a former work, occasion presented itself for referring
the opinions of men in respect concerning the enquiring into after and
searching out the standard of propriety several principles or fundamental rules that had been
employed as to which in the character of standards of propriety for judging of pronouncing concerning the propriety
of human conduct under the various all the modifications of which it is
susceptible: in particular concerning the propriety of the legislator conduct of
in the legislator in the execution of his office.

On that occasion the whole possible assemblage of these
principles was reduced under three hears – under three
distinct principles. 1 the principle of utility: which points
out as the proper standard for that purpose the tendency of the act in question
to promote the happiness welfare well-being to augment the sum of pleasure, to diminish the cause of pain on the part of the individual or community in
question: the principle of asceticism; which points out as
the proper standard the tendency of the act to promote the
unhappiness, to diminish the sum of pleasure, to augment the
sum of pain on the part of the individual or community
at pleasure: 3. the principle of caprice, (the same which
considered as applies to the distribution of good and evil in
the character of the matter of reward and punishment was
termed the principle of sympathy and antipathy) that
principle which concealing itself under an endless variety of
spurious names phraseology sets up in effect in lieu of a determinate
standard the caprice or passion of the person himself
by whom a judgment on the propriety of the act in question is pronounced.
