Of these different functionaries, there must be many, it will
readily occurr, whose interests, and whose respective means of
pursuing with effect their respective interest must have in a considerable
degree have been different: so far as those differences obtain,
what is predicated with truth of one of those classes, will not with truth
or at least with equal truth, be predicated predicable of others. True Right
yet, howsoever things might have been in this respect, in point
of fact, it will be found, so intimate is the connection in point
of interest between class and class, that with a little or no
practical incorrectness, they may be considered and spoken of
as possessing and activated by one come interest: and as
being capable to this as well other purposes of being with
sufficient propriety designated by the one common name above mentioned –
the man of law.

The interest of the public requires as (we have seen) that
the evils corresponding to the several ends of justice should as
much as possible be averted from the suitors: the interest
of the man of law, it will be seen has also required that those
same evils should in some instances be averted: but in a great to a prodigious
multitude of instances certain extent, and that as will be seen
a very large extent, the sinister interest of the man of law, the particular
interest of the workman, the sinister interest of the man of law has
required that those same evils instead of being averted should
be brought on and increased: and the more narrowly the work
comes to be examined into, the more clearly it will be seen, whether
these necessarily inciting interests have in fact have been inefficient and inoperative.
