Si le Roi savoit! was the dutiful reflection by which in under
the better days the former dynasty of the French monarchy the subject contrived to
conciliate the sense of his sufferings with his respect to the man
who frequently had but too large a share in the production of them.
Oh if his Lordship did but know! may perhaps even now
be the respectful exclamation of many the an inhabitant of English prison an English prisoner debtor. Oh if his
Lordship did but know, as if it were the hand that gathered in the
profit harvest would be ignorant of the source from which it came field i which it grew.

But in this sense, as well as in new sense, no less than in th that which it was intended
to convey there is much truth in the Latin adages.

Scire tuum nihil est, nisi te scire hoc sciat alter:
and the more a man knows of the matter where the complexion of a business matter has its dark shades, the more
a man knows of it, no lawyer to whom it is a secret, how much
it concerns him, not to be fixed with notice.

In those rude ages in which the foundations of the system
were laid, it may be matter of doubt how far any considerations
of so refined a nature could have entered into the of
the views and considerations in which this feature of the system
took its rise. But whether though or as the remote predecessors of the present
race did or did not take this circumstance into their view plan scheme
the benefit of it is not the less enjoyed, or the value of it less
fully accurately comprehended by their successors.
