2. Another consideration full of comfort, is – the absence of
all personal crimination. Mischief is every where most abundant. The system is an immense mass of
evil: but no individual now in existence can justly be
numbered among the its authors. Understand, as to any thing act of his that
is past. As to the future, it is altogether in his own power: it
rests with him to choose.

The chief prime authors, be they who they may (for to attribute ascribe
to each workman his separate share in the work is altogether impossible.)
The prime authors, in a word all the active authors, have long ago been
numbered among the dead: and even in their instance, the fault was
not so much the fault of the individual, as of the profession and the
age.

But let him not (return to Speak of the lawyer of present time)
let him not think to escape from such censure by taking advantage of
the prejudice in favour of the all who are out of the reach of envy.
<p>Let him not think to derive protection from their dead men's bones, as men culprits did
of old from the images of humbled Gods, by hugging them to his bosom.
Let him not add hypocrisy to sophistry, by shamming tenderness sympathy
and feeling
for beings – no not for beings but for names for sounds – that
have no feeling for themselves. Le

Let him not pretend to fancy Whatever merit then may be
either in death, or in distance or point of time a from a given point on the line of time
let him not pretend that it is in the power of such merit to change the nature of things, and convert
injustice into justice: let him not pretend that it is more
in the power of man after his death than it was during his life, no, not though his
name were Blackstone,
Coke, or even Hale,
to render that
past system which is repugnant to in a state of variance with every end of justice.

All these artifices are worn threadbare: though they
were multiplied as the folds in shields were multiplied, the light of
day has powered thence through, what is the fraud looks behind them is distinctly visible,
the and the of truth and justice of wisdom and probity stands . ☞ Take notice afterwards
under Obstacles that though
there is no direct crimination
if it shew as much though
unavoidable suffering
in respect
of loss of reputation &c sufficient to render opposition a matter of certainty.
