Evidence
Thus it is that under the technical system, every thing
by which a lawyer stands distinguished from a common man distinguishes him to his
disadvantage. By Every thing by which he is distinguished from
a common man, he is lowered below the rule of common men
in point of probity, in point of intelligence, or in both together. Take
him out of law, a lawyer, like another man, may be good
and wise: but just in so far as he is a lawyer, exactly just
so much the less good is he, so much the less wise.
In almost every other lawful law of life a man may go on
to his life's end without mischief, deceit or nonsense. Under
the technical system no man of law, as such can scarce stir a finger, can
scarce move his lips without doing mischief, practising deceit,
and talking nonsense.
