Evidence

In the eyes of an enlightened lover of mankind, the
strictest obedience
disposition to submitt to it, and pay obedience to it
would not be lessened, much less done away, by any persuasion
of the depravity mischievousness of the system itself, or any opinion relative
to the views and characters, moral or intellectual, of the persons
employed occupied in the execution of it. The reason for obedience
is founded grounded not on any opi the contemplation of the party of the
mischief, but on the contemplation of the inefficacy, and non-necessity, as well as mischievousness
of all violent remedies.

Placing the reason for submission on a foundation of
this sort, is placing it upon a risk; placing it upon an opinion
true or false just or unjust of the personal qualities of particular classes or
individuals of among mankind, is placing it in a quicksand.

It is on these terms and these only that the most punctual
obedience is and ever will be perfectly unexceptionally consistent with the
frust censure.

The contrary is the persuasion naturally and constantly articulated
by the advocates of abuse. the reasons calls for obedience
being placed upon by them
The disposition or Obedience is by them in their account of the matter risk in their
account of the matter in no more solid foundation, more solid
than that of the opinion of the personal virtue: if more in the rulers of the day at the
time. Placed upon that slippery foundation, and for what reason?
For what but that a pretence may never be wanting
for complaint, for crushing scrutiny; and for portraying dressing
up in the character of enemies to society, its most zealous and enlightened as well as zealous, not to say it sonly friend.

Add. This not an appeal from the legislators to the people, but from the judicial
power to the legislators.
