Murder

A Corpse is found A dead body is found with man is found dead with man is found dead on the
high road with marks of violence. Who is he? nobody can tell
for many days, at the end of which the corpse
must be buried being offensive and no longer re-
cognizable. Suppose him to be marked, and he
is known at once: adage the intelligence is circulated all over
the country: it comes immediately to the knowledge of his
friends.] In what company was he last seen?
Is there anybody he was upon ill terms with, or had
lately quarrel'd with? What money was he likely
to have had about him? To none of these questionsNo one can give furnish any
answer can anybody give an answer light with respect to any of these questions: perhaps
never: at any rate not for several many days. In
the meantime the body must be buried, being
grown offensive and no longer recognizable, or the
murderer is fled beyond the reach of justice. Suppose
him marked, light flies in immediately
from all quarters:(a) Note

in spirits: and
in that condition produced
in evidence on
the trial of any one
suspected of having
been an accessary to
the death. the intelligence spreads almost
instantaneously all over the country. The
friends of the deceased themselves on their part:
the magistrate, on his: virtuous zeal or the hope
of reward furnish timely supply evidence without delay. Suspicion
(if not convincing proof) finds out immediately
its proper object: and which way so ever he turns,
he finds flight hopeless, and escape impracticable.
