Indirect
is taken, we one may take for granted conclude, in every nation
in Europe: in France such an account thus
taken of a man is called by an appropriated
name, his signalement.
But of the nice particularities that discriminate
the human form – verbal descriptions
are very inadequate indicia in comparison
of graphical representation. Who ever
from the minutest and exactest verbal description
that was ever given formed any so precise an idea of the
person described as he could might have formed drawn
from upon the most transient glance. A practise
which is now familiar to everybody is that of
drawing profiles from shadows projected on a
all. These even without colouring gave that present commonly
a very striking resemblance at least to anyone
who has once seen the person they are done taken from.
They are done executed at so much a cheap rate as
to be afforded in the retail at half a crown
or even considerably less. The profile thus taken might for
at an expence probably as inconsiderable be transferred
upon a block of wood, and from thence
multiplied as cheaply and expeditiously as printed
copies
