Quasi-marking copies: profiles of this sort I have seen at the
head of several German books. It used to be
common in the English newspapers and is
still in some of the American to prefix to
certain advertisements a graphical symbol calculated to
print impress the imagination the more rapidly
with the idea of the subject of the advertisement:
one may see the figure of a ship at the head of an advertisement

the head of an advertisement of a run-away
